Portrait of KING (part 1): a little prep for a new commission

Preparing the panel and a new palette

First up - tinted gesso onto the wood panel - this creates a paintable surface and tones the panel all in one step - yeh!

Once the first layer is dry, I lightly sand the panel with very fine sandpaper. I repeat these layers a 2nd and 3rd time for a beautifully smooth finish.

Fresh palette: this will be a painting of a beautiful grey horse emerging from a dark background with a little sunlight reflected on his coat on one side. The palette will be made up of fairly cool colours with a little warmth - here are the colours that I have laid out to start with:

Lamp black/ Paynes Grey, Raw Umber/ Burnt Umber/ Raw Sienna/ Buff Titanium White and Titanium white.
